Cooperative Enterprise Empowers Women
This year's theme highlights how the cooperative model of enterprise can successfully empower women. It links to the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action (Beijing+15) which sets out an agenda for women's empowerment.
Cooperatives have a key role to play as they are able to respond to both women's practical and strategic needs. Whether it be through women only cooperatives or cooperatives made up of women and men, they offer an effective organisational means for women members and employees to raise their living standards by accessing decent work opportunities, savings and credit facilities, health, housing and social services, and education and training. Cooperatives also offer women opportunities for participation in and influence over economic activities. Women gain self-reliance and self-esteem through this participation. Cooperatives also contribute to the improvement of the economic, social and cultural situation of women in other ways including promoting equality and changing institutional biases. |

World Population Day - July 11
|
|
Be Counted: Say What You Need
World Population Day was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989 as a way to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues.
Each year UNFPA selects a different theme to rally around. World Population Day 2010, Everyone Counts, will underscore the importance of data for development. It will foster an understanding of why reliable, disaggregated data is so crucial to progress and encourage people to participate in the census and other data collection efforts.

Schools Tree Day - July 30 |
|
National Tree Day will be held on Sunday 1st August, with Schools Tree Day taking place on the Friday 30th July. Last year over 312 000 people, including 229,000 school children dug deep to improve their natural surroundings. Tree Day shows children how easy and fun it is to help our environment. It’s also Australia’s biggest community tree planting event.
National Tree Day aims to inspire, educate and recruit Australians to actively care for our unique land and create future generations of committed environmental custodians. |
